The Social Dilemma is a 2020 American docu-drama film directed by Jeff Orlowski and written by Orlowski, Davis Coombe and Vickie Curtis. The documentary side of the story describes of how the world today has been gifted with the most convenient way to communicate long distances and even improve their technological development by a ground scale level with the use of the web or the internet. The social media that has been granted to us by the people is a gift that has made our life easy in any problematic situation we can think of or even help us cope with our frustration and anxiety. But this does not mean that all that glitter is gold because with the great achievement of acquiring the ability to commune far distance and see the world on a tiny screen it has brought out a curse with it that most people follow the information distributed by some specific people who have an agenda of their own and to achieve there selfish agenda they do what it takes to manipulate the mind of specific people who will then raise there voice in such a manner of speaking that they gather a crowd which becomes a mob all to famish the hunger of one person who got what he wanted and in the end led people down to a ditch where their minds begin to rot with further and further conspiracy that does not even exist in such a way that there way of living and thinking changes and above all their ideology which is the center of anyone to live their lives changes that remains so until they die like fools just so one person could have heavier pockets. The drama part of the story shows how a family of people lives are so connected with the technology of social media that they do not even let go of their devices even on the dining table and when they are put to the test to live without their devices they start to act like monsters and do what it takes to get there instruments back so they can post their faces with filter of even watch videos that has no improvement to their life.

The main problem of social media is that it’s a vast platform that if we were to shut it down it will cause even more damage than it is already causing to the younger generation. The main reason for that being that it is consistent of algorithms that only respond to what the user is most interested in. In this situation, it could be either a good thing or a bad thing because if a person watches a nice video with a great moral lesson to it the algorithm will see that and recommend the user that type of content in the future but at the same time if someone watches something just at random and picks up a conspiracy there video then he will not be that much interested at first but the algorithm will still suggest him other videos like that which will eventually grab the user’s interest. The algorithm does not know when to stop or when not to stop because its main goal which it is programmed to execute is to provide the user the best content based on his personality without the algorithm itself being unaware that it is shaping the personality of young generations. It is like a person who feeds there kids sweets all the time without knowing that too much of sweetness is bad for the health. After watching the social dilemma, I was actually grateful that someone made a documentary in such a way that it tells how manipulative the platform of social media can be without boring the audience. There has been a lot of documentary made about how social media has brought a curse with it but no one has made it in such a way that it explains easily to the common public how it is effecting our life without them knowing that it is actually happening. What I liked most about the social dilemma docu-drama is that it does not consist of just few people who have different theory who have been researching this for years but that it consisted of many people who words in the social media platform and how they made a paradox that if you remove it from the world, the world in itself will be in a crisis while if we keep the platform as is then it will keep on influencing the younger generation with them knowing so and always causing small accidents. Basically it is either a few dozen accidents a year or a whole world tragedy. The people sitting there giving the interview are the people who made such a thing possible and it shows on their face how successful they were but still know that what they made has ruined a lot of people lives and they felt that they need to come clean to the people so that they could someway find relief in that in such a way that some people will know that the people who created social media platform are apologizing to their users so that some will be able to learn this dilemma and be able to coup with the addiction. In the end, it all comes down to the fact that social media has become a huge part of our lives such in a way that it has become a part of our body and whenever we are away from social media we feel a phantom pain that there was a part of our self that is right now missing and we always end up going back to our devices as soon as it is possible because we cannot bear to live without that part of our body in any way since we have been attached to it since we were able to remember.
