The essence of Ramadan

  • The essence of Ramadan

    Introduction:

Ramadan, is the most sacred month for Muslims all around the world. During this time, a key element for Muslims is fasting every day for thirty days from dawn till sunset. It is a month of blessings and forgiveness. Not only that, but a spiritual time for deep contemplation and practicing self-discipline. It is believed that fasting provides a direction to gain spiritual and moral values. This holy season that comes around once a year, gathers all the Muslims throughout the globe. With the real essence of praying and asking forgiveness for their sins.

    Observations:

In this divine period of time, families and friends come together for Sehri and Iftar. It forms unity in the society in a way no other time of the year is able to. Individuals express their fondness and affection for the others and cherishing the moments spent together. Social gatherings occur the most, where citizens invite each other for Iftar and celebrate in union. Neighbors come out in the open and communicate a lot more with others. Everyone tends to be filled with desire for charitable acts, they pour in and donate money for the poor. The community are harmonious and behaves courteously. They take a very warm and welcoming approach towards life.

    Contemporary Norms:

Furthermore, this is the era of a postmodern world, a uniquely exciting aspect also comes into play, which is the society’s definition of night time. Regardless after midnight, it is considered absolutely normal to be out and about in the city with friends, family or colleagues for grabbing a meal. In contrast to conventional times, it is a fascinating notion that Ramadan has been able to break cultural and social barriers. As a matter of fact, there has been an entire cultural revolution observed, which celebrates the night time, with the reason for Sehri. Long after midnight, we see people driving to the markets and restaurants, hunting for their favorite cuisines. Such instances are usually discouraged other times of the year. Conversely, no one derives suspicion, it is absolutely normalized today.

    Struggles of Discipline & Patience:

However, one can notice a partial flaw among the masses. Despite the inclination towards such philanthropic practices, patience seems to get lost in a swift moment. Examples of such can be seen while on the road just moments before Iftar time. Drivers are deliriously impatient to reach their destinations and break their fast. When men enter the mosque, they stand in a straight row offering their prayers in discipline. Yet, the moment they step out, eyes are met with a view of scattered shoes and disorderly parked vehicles. We believe that the Satan gets locked up in Ramadan. In spite of that, one might even say the real satan can be witnessed amongst the attitudes of the crowd whenever they turn bitter, resulting in arguments and disgraceful acts.

    Summary:

In a broad view, society acknowledges sin is an atrocious matter, yet everyone sins and we cannot deny that as human beings. It has been almost fostered into a habit which is difficult to get rid of. People create interventions to prevent from sinning, nevertheless, it does not last long after Ramadan and they continue onto life with the same state of mind. One should strive to improve themselves before criticizing and judging others in society, take a good look in the mirror and reflect on where one stands. For the most part, Ramadan is a month that breeds solidarity and harmony.
